The history of joint replacement Knee joint design and manufacture

Normal KneeNo arthritis is present in this xray of a normal knee. The joint space is well preserved and the alignment of the knee is normal. No pain is experienced and the knee is able to support normal activities. Arthritic KneeThe joint space is absent due to the erosive changes due to degenerative arthritis. Bone rubs on bone and the patient experiences severe pain. The alignment is abnormal with either bow legged or knock knee deformities being common.

Replaced Knee, Cementless TechniqueTotal knee replacement has been performed to put new surfaces on the knee.  The pain from the arthritis is gone.  The prosthesis is attached using a technique where bone grows into the textured metal surfaces.  This requires good bone quality and the recovery is slightly slower than with cement. Replaced Knee, Cemented TechniqueTotal knee replacement has restored the arthritic surfaces with new metal and plastic prostheses.  The implants are attached with improved techniques using bone cement.  The recovery is rapid and the success with this method is excellent.
